New Poem Forthcoming in Mudfish 23

I am pleased to report that my poem, “The Stork and The Storge” has been selected for publication in Mudfish 23 forthcoming in 2022. This poem was written in response to a prompt in the Poetry Project Workshop, “Forms of Love” led by poet Nikki Wallschlaeger earlier this year. Mudfish is a journal of poetry, art, and fiction. It takes its title from the storyteller’s stool in Nigerian art. In totally diverse ways, the poems each tell a story. Mudfish has featured work from the best established and emerging artists and poets – including John Ashbery, Charles Simic and Frank Stella – since it burst onto the poetry scene in 1984.

Iowa Review Poetry Prize Winner 2021

My poems, “La Almohada”, “dotofrom” and “Propped Up Things” were selected by poet Tracie Morris to be awarded the Iowa Review 2021 Poetry Prize. Morris commented as follow: “La Almohada is a richly textured, strongly sonic poem that interweaves past and present, multiple cultures and how we are connected to—and indebted to—each other linguistically. It is satisfying work, worth spending time with.” Publication forthcoming in Iowa Review 50/4 in Spring 2022. These will be my first published poems since I was in college. I am so grateful to have been selected to be printed in the Iowa Review, such an esteemed source for American letters.

Inspiration Practice Podcast Launched

In May 2021, I launched my new “beta” version of my podcast, Inspiration Practice, which will explore how artists & writers connect to inspiration & maintain a creative practice through ritual. I have published two hour-long, in-depth interviews, one with conceptual artist, Tattfoo Tan, and the other with poet, Stuart Dischell, more recently. I also posted six short “essays” in which I read a poem or the text of a daily meditation reader followed by my analysis of what the writing means to me. Listen on any of these streaming platforms:

Read-Through of Corona Crazy on Zoom

Zoom Gallery of Actors from our March 17, 2021 Read-Thru of Corona Crazy

On March 21, 2021, Benjamin Hey! and I gathered together some actors and amateurs to read through the first draft of our script for the musical, Corona Crazy, which is under development. The actors (and producers with whom we had shared the draft script) gave us great, detailed notes. As a result, we went back to our laptops and began to create more detailed storylines, additional characters, and three new songs. It was a lot of fun and a great success for us. We are so grateful to these friends and colleagues for taking the time to share an evening with us in order to help us make this musical really sing!!! We are now still in the rewriting process which we hope will be done by the end of June 2021. Stay tuned!

Benjamin Hey! Performs Early Cuts of Corona Crazy on Insta

Back when the pandemic was raging in the Spring 2020, my collaborator, Benjamin Hey! wrote a cycle of 12 songs for which I wrote characters and a book that became Corona Crazy: The ZOOMusical. As Ben wrote each song, he posted a kooky heartfelt video of himself on Instagram performing each song in a different persona and home-made costuming. These videos made me laugh (and sometimes cry) at his antics and his pathos — and inspired me to suggest that we turn them (and others!) into a musical with 10 characters — all of whom would be loosely based on the personality contained in the heart of each song. I hope you enjoy them as much as I (and Ben) did!!! Stay tuned for the actual musical to be performed online on Zoom with actors in 9 squares on the screen!
